Psychotherapy

Addresses problems such as anxiety, depression and trauma in a supportive environment.

As a therapist, Elizabeth strikes a balance between delivering evidence-based interventions, whilst also providing warmth and empathy. She is passionate about psychotherapy and loves to learn about new research and perspectives, as well as to share ideas and witness the impact they can have. She offers CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) and/or EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing).

What is CBT? Cognitive Behavioural Therapy has been shown to be a highly effective treatment for a range of problems and is the therapy of choice for many psychological issues.

It is based on the idea that the way people think about their experiences influences how they feel and how they will then behave and that those behaviours can influence thoughts. Therefore, it can become easy to be pulled into vicious cycles of thoughts, feelings and behaviours which can seem difficult to change.

 CBT usually involves identifying how this cycle operates for the individual. It should help you to understand what is keeping your low mood or anxiety going. The goal is then to break this cycle by equipping you with techniques to interrupt it. By the end of therapy, patients should feel as though they have a new set of skills which they can use to manage problems with in the future.

CBT works

 There is a great deal of research evidence to show that CBT works effectively in treating depression and anxiety disorders. This research has been carefully reviewed by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) and they recommend that CBT is used to treat;

•         Panic disorder

•         Generalised anxiety disorder

•         Social anxiety

•         Illness anxiety

•         Post-traumatic stress disorder

•         Depression

•         Obsessive compulsive disorder

What is EMDR?

 EMDR is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the emotional distress that results from difficult life experiences. It allows the mind to heal from psychological trauma, much as the body recovers from physical trauma.

In EMDR, eye movements are used, internal associations arise and clients process difficult memories. In successful EMDR therapy, the meaning of painful events is transformed on an emotional level. Unlike talk therapy, the insights clients gain in EMDR therapy result from their own accelerated natural healing processes.

EMDR Works

Although EMDR is a much newer therapy than CBT, there is a great deal of evidence to show that it is an effective treatment for trauma. NICE and the World Health Organisation recommend it as a treatment for PTSD and there is a growing body of evidence that shows it is helpful for a range of other problems including anxiety disorders, OCD, depression and behavioural difficulties.
