Shiatsu & Qi Gong
With foundations in Chinese Medicine, these gentle techniques promote relaxation & positively affect a variety of symptoms
Shiatsu
Shiatsu is a physical therapy originating from Japan which uses a combination of acupressure points, gentle manipulation and stretching to re-energise weak areas and reduce tension in the body. The giver uses thumbs, fingers and palms in a compassionate way to affect the physical functioning of the nervous, circulatory, respiratory and endocrine systems.
Shiatsu is given through clothes and is generally practiced on a futon at floor level although it can also be given on a chair. It is based on the Chinese Medicine model and is generally safe for most people to receive, often promoting a sense of relaxation and well-being which can positively affect a range of symptoms. Further information can be found at www.shiatsusociety.org.
Qi Gong
Qi Gong is a mindful movement practice that encourages somatic awareness by engaging mind, body and breath. One translation of Qi Gong is ‘skill with energy’. It is underpinned by Chinese Medicine and philosophy. Qi Gong is especially good for people who are sedentary and haven’t exercised for a while as many of the movements can gently open up the joints and tissues that have become stiff. There are also elements of meditation and breath work in the movements.
